The protagonists' partners do not appear on camera. We know them by their voices, their feet, their backs, reduced to ethereal silhouettes that linger in the shadows. Mrs. Chan's husband is constantly traveling; Mr. Chow's wife works as a night receptionist. They are invisible but powerfully present. An enigma, a pain, an unbearable weight. Mirrors and glass stand between them, capturing their thoughts. Crouching behind the curtains, the camera shows what happens through the glass: sometimes we only see a part or hear what is not meant for us. Everything is calculated: the rain pouring over the lovers, the ignored faces of the spouses, with a camera trying to find out what is happening between them, skillfully shielded behind that obstacle that inevitably hides and separates them.

Two decades later, Wong Kar-Wai's masterpiece still gives us goosebumps, scene by scene, shot by shot, with frames that look like canvases torn from a museum. Amidst red curtains and beautiful patterned walls, to the sound of Nat King Cole's boleros and Umebayashi's hypnotic waltz, here we remain, in a Hong Kong boarding house, enthralled by Mrs. Chan's swaying hips and her collection of Chinese qipaos, crossing paths again and again with her neighbor, the exquisite Mr. Chow, pretending to ignore each other while passion devours them from within. She always waits for her husband. He waits for his wife. In time, they discover that both are having affairs, and that's where their particular complicit infidelity begins, first in their gazes, in their touches, in arbitrary encounters, and then in intimate dates that never culminate.
